Subject: last day in Arbroath
well, amazingly, i made it back to the cute little internet cafe where you last heard from me. This is my last day in Arbroath. i really don't want to leave. this town is so cute and beautiful, i feel like i'm just getting to know it.
anyway, nearly everyone else in the group went on a hike today, except for those who are sick with colds and lame from spraining their ankles and those like me, who are just plain slackers and didn't feel like walking uphill for 7 miles.
it was a rather quiet and tranquil weekend here. we had a lot of free time, and so i read a lot (made it completely through The New Yorker from a couple weeks ago as well as a novel called Blindness, by Jose Saramago, which was great) and walked around and went to the beach.
on Saturday, we went to the nearby city of Dundee to see the Dundee School of Art Annual degree show, which opened that day. there was a huge diversity of work. the ceramics work was really excellent, as was the animation work. one artist who really caught my eye was one fibers major who used a ton of green dental floss to make these huge sculptural pieces. i took many pictures, which i am sure will be useful at some point in the future.
saturday night we had a huge bonfire down on the beach at Auchmithie. it felt like of like camp, except we had a ton of wine and beer. i still can't get over the fact that it's never completely dark. even as we were leaving, the sky was still a dark shade of blue, and the moon looked like the sun.
my work (you know, the reason i'm actually here) is coming along pretty well. i've been mostly just drawing and writing. when i was in Dundee i picked up some black and red drawing ink, which i've been working with, and that's made me really happy. i think it'll be much easier once i get to Glasgow, they're going to have a really nice studio set up for us plus everyone is going to get a little stipend to buy materials from the bookstore there.
my headphones just died. well, the one ear died, but i might as well have thrown them into the gaping jaws of hell because headphones aren't good for much of anything if you can only hear from one ear (well, it bothers the heck out of me, at any rate). so i have to go to Woolworth's and try to find a relatively inexpensive pair.
we're leaving tomorrow for the Isle of Skye. it's supposed to be a six hour ride in these awful, claustrophobic rental vans, which i am not looking forward to.
i'm not sure if i'm going to have internet access once i get to Skye, so if i don't, i'll catch you all in Glasgow.
love to all,
